Oxford Union President-Elect Ousted Due to Charlie Kirk Posts
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been ousted from office after losing a vote of confidence that followed his controversial social media posts about the conservative activist.
The vote against George Abaraonye reached the required two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The controversy erupted after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that seemed to celebrate the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was fatally shot while speaking at a college in Utah.
According to reports, one Instagram post reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the phrase 'lol'.
The president-elect is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with fellow students seeming to express approval of the event.
Vote Outcome
The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with results revealed on Tuesday.
Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast in favor of no confidence, while just over five hundred were opposed the motion.
The notice stated that the future president was considered to have resigned in following the society's regulations.
Procedural Disputes
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on the previous day after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.
In a statement, the student claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His response unequivocally denied that any representative appointed by George had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Ongoing Dispute
The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he remained president-elect.
His statement added that George was "proud and thankful to have the support of well in excess of a majority of university members" who supported a "secure voting process and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have said that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On Friday, Kirk's former chief of staff read out an public message to the Oxford Union on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The message accused the society of becoming a institution where "student leaders publicly celebrate the killing of a ideological rival".
The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".
The Oxford Union had previously criticized the student's remarks after Kirk's death and stated that concerns filed against him had been referred for official review.
The president-elect had been one of multiple members to discuss with Kirk at the union in May.
