Moscow Continuously Targeting UK Space Assets, Space Command Chief Reports
Russia is attempting to jam British defense space systems frequently, as stated by the leader of the UK Space Command.
Maj Gen Paul Tedman revealed that Moscow's military were consistently attempting to disrupt UK-based military activities “weekly” and were carefully observing the country’s space assets.
“We’re seeing UK space assets being jammed by the Russians on a fairly regular basis,” he stated.
The UK operates about six dedicated military satellites for communication and observation, which the general noted were equipped with counter-jamming technology.
He added: “They’ve got equipment on board that can see UK space assets and are trying to collect data from them.”
Global Space Threats
The threat of space-based interference extends beyond the UK. In September, Germany’s defence minister, the German official, revealed that Russia had been tracking Intelsat space systems operated by the German armed forces.
“They can jam, disable, control or physically damage space assets,” he stated at a space conference in the German capital.
Cooperative Response
In response to increasing global friction, the United Kingdom and United States recently conducted their initial joint space operation in space, in what defense officials hailed as a major step forward in allied cooperation.
During early September, a American space asset was relocated in orbit to inspect a British space system and verify it was functioning properly. The operation was conducted under Operation Olympic Defender, a joint military framework aimed at enhancing space protection and durability.
“Skillfully performed with US Space Command, I could not be more pleased or proud of the rapid progress we are making with our partners,” the general commented.
Increasing Tensions
The escalation in space occurs while tensions with Russia persistently increase.
The British foreign minister, Yvette Cooper, stated recently that the UK was prepared to respond after the American leader, President Trump, publicly urged NATO partners to shoot down intruding Russian aircraft.
In a speech to the UN in September, Cooper condemned Moscow’s “inflammatory and irresponsible” incursions of Nato airspace in recent weeks, including events over Baltic nations, Eastern Europe and Romania.
