2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.
My key observation from the recent Day of the Devs showcase was highly engaging, my biggest takeaway was a personal epiphany: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—in some way feature these leaping protagonists. Considering a gathering of frogs is called an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.
A Legacy of Leaping
Amphibians have been not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a special place. Yet, their popularity has markedly surged in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.
A Data-Driven Dive
To grasp this rise, I conducted a thorough analysis into the past five years of frog-related gaming on Steam. My methodology was admittedly subjective, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The findings tell a compelling story: a marked rise from less than 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat visible elsewhere, such as the revival of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the explosion in gaming seems uniquely strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a movement I can get behind. Frogs have built-in appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and sticky tongues enable a wide array of innovative control schemes.
A number of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year yet.
If these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase often do—we may indeed be witnessing a true amphibian entertainment revival.
